This project came from my intention to better understand my local neighborhood and what historical, economic and social factors have influenced its development. Research began in spring of 2010 and included interviews,, analysis of historical maps, digital sketches, and a collection of found and donated materials from local daily economic transactions. I invited participants, known and unknown into my open studio hours over the course of several weeks to visit and talk, and asked them to bring a item of refuse to donate. The donated items were used to construct a layered map of the city of San Rafael, with the location of materials being placed in ways and areas that were as relevant as possible to the subject of our dialogue. In August of 2010, I presented it as a work-in-progress at the Farmer's Market in order to gain a wider range of participation. The project remains unfinished.
