Toile for Golden Gate Park
Toile for Golden Gate Park
Acrylic on collaged paper
2015

These three, almost identical, panels are paintings of toile wallpaper for the reference area that I created for my residency in the Kimball gallery at the de Young. The content of each panel incorporates both traditional and contemporary references to idealized nature, public space, leisure time, and Golden Gate Park itself. The panels are made of old promotional flyers from the de Young, taped together and primed. I painted each image in red paint on top, repeating the same design on each panel. The paintings are therefore very similar, but not exact copies of each other. This image shows the toile installed as a "wallpaper" background for a reading area I set up in Kimball Gallery. The bookshelf has references about the history of the park, San Francisco, and creative map making.
