Artwork > Residency at the Orto Botanico di Palermo

Bananas are a tree that exist all over the Orto but are also an important part of the Giardino Coloniale. Their history in Sicily predates the colonial period, and there was reputedly a variety that existed here in the early modern era. Bananas were however, an important example of a crop imported from other European colonies that were well adapted for Sicily's subtropical climate. Now, with increasing temperatures, they remain a potentially useful food crop.
